Thank you for your interest in the 2020 McCook Central/Montrose School District Driver’s Education (DE) Program. The purpose of this program is to instill safe and knowledgeable driving skills in our community’s young drivers. In order to successfully complete DE in South Dakota, students will need to complete a 30 hour classroom course and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Successful completion will allow a student to receive a driver’s permit without taking the written or driving test at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It can also lead to insurance discounts for your student. For more information, please refer to the South Dakota Driver’s Manual, which can be found at: https://dps.sd.gov/application/files/7315/4871/9000/SouthDakotaDriverManual2018.pdf. Your child is eligible to take DE if he or she turns 14 by the end of 2020.
Classroom time will be spent studying good driving habits. In addition to standard DE curriculum, students will take an in depth look at the SD Drivers Manual. Classroom guest speakers will include local insurance experts to talk about insurance costs and ways students can keep those costs down for their families, McCook County Sheriff’s office to talk about common mistakes young drivers make within the city and things that young drivers can do to be safe, and SD highway patrol officers to talk about safe driving habits on our highways.
The classroom portion of DE will be held at the Montrose School June 1st through June 4th. Class will start at 7:30 am and will end at 3:30 pm each day. Lunch will be held from 12:00 – 12:30. Students must bring a sack lunch. Students will not be allowed to leave school grounds during lunch time. McCook Central students will be bused over each morning with the bus leaving Salem at 7:15 am and will also be brought back to Salem at the conclusion of class each day.
Driving time will be spent practicing good driving habits. Students will be provided with a skills report at the end of their experience that highlights strengths and weaknesses in their driving skills and suggests things that they can do to become safer drivers.
Driving portion of DE will start June 8th. Groups and dates will be decided on the first day of class. If for some reason the date your child signed up for driving does not work, it will be the responsibility of your child to find another date to drive by working a dates out from another student.
